About John Hunter Children's Hospital

The John Hunter Children's Hospital is a 113 bed tertiary referral facility. It is one of only three children's hospitals in New South Wales and the only such facility in Australia located outside of a capital city.

The John Hunter Children's Hospital includes a medical ward, oncology/surgical ward, adolescent and day surgery ward, sleep unit, neonatal intensive care unit, outpatient clinic and school room.

We treat youngsters from a wide geographical area stretching from Wyong, north to the Queensland border, and west to the New England tablelands. Our Hospital accepts children up to the age of 19 years.

The John Hunter Children's Hospital treats over 8,000 children (including Day Stay) each year and some 75,519 occasions of service are performed in Outpatients and community child health services in the metropolitan area.

More than 20,000 children present to our emergency department each year.

Asthma is the most common reason for admission to the John Hunter Children's Hospital.  Other conditions include accidents, ear diseases and gastroenterological problems.

Other specialities we treat include cystic fibrosis, diabetes, oncology (cancer) babies born with cleft palates and brain injury rehabilitation.

We have a specialist paediatric allied health service, with occupational therapy, speech therapy, dietetics, physiotherapy and social work.

All clinical staff working with the John Hunter Children's Hospital are trained in paediatrics.

Hours of Operation

The John Hunter Children's Hospital operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Normal business hours are 8.30am - 5.00pm weekdays.

How to get to JHCH

The John Hunter Campus is located off lookout Road in the suburb of New Lambton in Newcastle. Public transport to the Hospital is easy with bus services connecting with train stations at Newcastle, Broadmeadow and Cardiff. For timetable and route information phone 131500.
