Support for Intensive Care Unit gets a kick along at Friday’s JETS game

This Friday night’s JETS game is sure to be a big success - for more than just the obvious reason.

In addition to the very talented and energetic 11 local heroes who will take to the field against Perth Glory on Friday night, some not so well known locals will be out in force asking for donations to support another worthwhile cause.

Newcastle’s Westpac Banking staff are fielding 25 of their own local heroes to support the valuable work of the Intensive Care Unit on the John Hunter Campus.

Mr Paul Cragg, Westpac Regional Manager Business Banking, Newcastle & Central Coast said he and his Branch staff were inspired to help make a difference to the work of this critical healthcare service, when witnessed through the eyes of one of their own.

When Charlie Turner was just three months old, he took up residence in the Intensive Care Unit at the John Hunter. There he remained for 247 days, under the watchful eye of a dedicated team of healthcare professionals, before spending a further 37 days in the John Hunter Children’s Hospital.

It was the tireless determination and respect for their precious little son displayed by these healthcare teams that encouraged Charlie’s father Chris and his mum Felicity to ‘give something back’.

“All I did was share our story with my colleagues at Westpac and when they met Charlie and members of the ICU team, the inspiration to do something worthwhile was contagious,” Mr Turner said.

Westpac Bank Volunteers will be collecting community donations at each of the main entries prior to the Game starting on Friday night.

Soccer fans attending the JETS Game on Friday 18 January are invited to help if they can.

Westpac are also inviting their customers to make donations when they visit a Branch or buy tickets in individual Branch raffles.

Monies raised through this community fundraiser will make possible the purchase of an MRI compatible ventilator to allow infant patients to undergo specialist imaging procedures while remaining ventilated.
