Surviving the HSC
Parents often ask: “ How do I know when I need to worry or is increased worry just an occupational hazard of living with a HSC student? How can I offer support without being intrusive?”
One of the most important ways to support your son or daughter during the HSC is to keep the communication channels open. This can be done even with simple statements like “let me know if there is anything I can do to help”. You often don't need to say much more than this, just leave the message with your son or daughter. It does not mean that you do not worry or care any less, but is a message that you are there for them.
There is sometimes a fine line between what might be interpreted as intrusion when the intention is to offer additional support. Be aware of your own anxiety levels and how they influence your expectations and interaction with your son and daughter at HSC time.
Encourage your child to join with your family for a meal because this helps to connect them with other family members at a time when study demands can contribute to isolation. At appropriate intervals, offer a drink and snack. It may be a chance to briefly join them, otherwise just leave it with them.
There are some young people who have additional vulnerabilities at times of pressure. They may have experienced past difficulties. If there are signs that your son or daughter appears to be experiencing increased anxiety, is becoming increasingly isolated, or experiencing dramatic changes in mood you may want to discuss this with your local General Practitioner or School Counsellor. Be aware of what other resources there are that may assist in these situations, whether there are grounds for concern or even if it is just for reassurance.
Generally, it is important that both parents and students try to maintain a positive attitude during what can be a stressful and challenging time. Most importantly, maintain your sense of humour which often gets us through some pretty stressful times.
Both parents and students should keep in mind that while HSC results have an impact on future choices, there are many paths that will lead a person to their goal if all doesn't go to plan – a person's life will not be defined by their results!
