An initiative of Hunter New England Health and the
School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Newcastle. As well as
research, the Centre provides nurses, practising in or wishing to practice
in paediatric/neonatal/adolescent and/or child and family health nursing,
with opportunities to undertake continuing education via on-line learning.
The courses are available as on-line continuing education or as electives
in many of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the University of Newcastle
masters programs. Each course is undertaken over a 12 week period. Currently
the Centre offers:
Alterations in Child Health
This course focuses on the nursing care of children and youths who experience
difficulty in maintaining optimum health. It addresses general concepts
of neonatal, child and youth health nursing practice, as well as the
management of clinical problems. Nursing interventions required for
both the child and his/her family to function at the best possible level
are explored.
Assessment: The Neonate, Child,
Young Person and Family
This course provides opportunity for registered nurses to review and
further enhance their skills and knowledge in assessing the neonate,
child, young person and their families. Nursing assessment is explored
and investigated with opportunity to establish individual learning needs
specific to each student's clinical context.
Families in Society
This course allows students to broaden their knowledge and understanding
of families in society. The concept of “The Family” is investigated
and critically analysed with the role families play in the development,
education and health of children explored. The diversity of family structures
and factors influencing family life are also investigated.
Pregnancy, Birth and the Family
This course allows students to broaden their knowledge of the child
bearing woman and her family. It is designed for registered nurses who
require a knowledge of pregnancy, birth and the post natal period, but
who do not intend to practice in the field of midwifery. The importance
of nurses interacting with their spouse/partner, family members and
support networks is explored.
Special Care of the Newborn
This course allows students to broaden their understanding and knowledge
of the neonate requiring additional health support and treatment. Care
may be in an obstetric unit, special care nursery or level 2 section
in an intensive care setting. The role of the nurse in assisting the
neonate to optimal health is explored, within the context of family
centred care.
Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing
This course allows students to broaden their understanding and knowledge
of the neonate requiring intensive care support and treatment. The role
of the nurse in assisting the neonate to optimal health is explored,
within the context of family centred care.
