The Centre for Education and Nursing Research in Child Health (the ENRiCH Centre) is a shared endeavour of the Kaleidoscope Children’s Health Network, Hunter New England Local Health District and the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Health, The University of Newcastle.

The Centre was established in response to a number of identified needs related to the provision of further education and professional development for children’s nurses and a facility and support for related research activities. The Centre is committed to fostering a culture of lifelong learning, scholarship, inquiry and best practice amongst nurses so that health care for children and their families is promoted, maintained and enhanced.
The mission of the Centre is to make available educational and professional development programmes and carry out research (click to access MyLink<click Collaborate + Share< View Collaborative Spaces<ENRiCH-Research>) and in children’s nursing which will, in turn, ensure high quality nursing care and services for children and their families.

The ENRiCH Centre offers courses related to the nursing care of neonates, children, young people and their families. The courses are available as online education and are electives in many of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the University of Newcastle postgraduate Master’s programs.

The courses offered through the ENRiCH Centre encourage nurses to be creative, innovative and self-directed whilst they further develop their confidence and competence as practising nurses. Course curricula incorporate modern teaching and learning principles, and reflect and address current issues and changes in health care.

Currently the postgraduate electives offered include:

Acute and Chronic Illness in Children

This course allows students to broaden their knowledge and skills in the assessment and nursing management of the neonate, child and younger person (hereafter called the child) and his/her family with an acute or chronic illness. It addresses general concepts of neonatal, child and youth health nursing practice, as well as the management of clinical problems. Nursing interventions required for both the child and his/her family to function at the best possible level are explored.

Assessment: The Neonate, Child, Young Person and Family

This course provides opportunity for registered nurses to review and further enhance their skills and knowledge in assessing the neonate, child, young person and their family. Nursing assessment is explored and investigated with opportunity to establish individual learning needs specific to each student's clinical context.

Pregnancy, Birth and the Family

This course allows students to broaden their knowledge of the child bearing woman and her family. It is designed for registered nurses who require knowledge of pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, but who do not intend to practice in the field of midwifery. The importance of nursing interactions with the spouse/partner, family members and other support networks are explored.

Special Care of the Newborn

This course allows students to broaden their understanding and knowledge of the neonate requiring additional health support and treatment. Care may be situated in a maternity unit, special care nursery or level 2 section of a neonatal intensive care unit. The role of the nurse in optimising the health of the neonate is explored, within the context of family centred care.

Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing

This course allows students to broaden their understanding and knowledge of the neonate requiring intensive care support and treatment. The role of the nurse in optimising the health of the neonate is explored, within the context of family centred care.
