Speech Pathology
Assessment and treatment of communication and/or swallowing difficulties. Enquiries regarding children with speech and language difficulties should be directed to your local community health centre speech pathologist (see Community Health Centres).
Due to long waiting lists, community health speech pathology services do not see children who are eligible for other public services such as Dept Ageing, Disability & Home Care.
Specialist clinics at the John Hunter Children's Hospital provide speech pathology services to children with cleft lip and/or palate, acquired communication difficulties (ie through an accident, injury or illness), and complex feeding difficulties requiring multidisciplinary input. A modified barium swallow clinic is also available at JHCH.
